50's & 60'S JAMAll instruments welcome! Rock out to the music of rock's pioneers (Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Elvis) AND the great 60s bands, including the British Invasion, Motown and more! You'll play songs by the Doors, the Kinks, Dylan, the Dead, Hendrix, the Who, all the good stuff from rocks greatest decades. Fred writes the chords up on the board and you can solo or just follow along playing rhythm - no pressure! These jams are a blast (from the past).

BLUEGRASS JAMFinally, a place for beginning and intermediate bluegrassers to learn to jam, using standard tunes that everybody plays. All bluegrass instruments welcome. We'll start with slow tempos, and kick it up a notch when (if) the class wants to do so. Emphasis on ensemble playing (soloing optional).

SWING UKULELE JUST ADDED!Learn to strum and sing some of the best songs from the 20s, 30s and 40s. Fred will help you out with chord shapes and even some theory about chord progressions, and you can request your favorite tunes from Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, whoever tickles your fancy. The uke was made to play the Great American Songbook, and here's a way to build your repertoire of the best songs ever written.

SLIDE UKULELEIf you're ready to up the ante on your playing consider learning how to play slide ukulele, a technique that will enhance any and all blues, Hawaiian, and country music. In this workshop Fred will teach you slide ukulele in standard and open tuning. Please bring your own glass slide, metal slide, or bottleneck.

INTRO TO L.A. MOUNTAIN / URBAN DULCIMER CLUBThis hour-long session is designed to prepare beginners to participate more fully in the club meeting that immediately follows (1:30 - 3:00 PM). Joellen will teach mountain dulcimer basics: how to tune, two basic strums, a fingerpicking pattern, how to read tablature, and a song.

UNDERSTANDING CHORD PROGRESSIONS FOR UKULELEIt's easier to learn new songs in a variety of genres if you understand chord progressions. Yes, there is sense to it all! Fred will explain chord movement, song structure, scale-wise patterns, 12 bar and 8 bar blues and more! We will study many different songs, including your own suggestions. You'll finally get an explanation of the circle of fifths (which motivates thouands of songs) that is understandable!

BEGINNING MANDOLIN JUST ADDED!Is mandolin just for bluegrass and Italian songs? No way! It's also heard in rock, country, folk, jazz, and swing. You'll learn songs in all these styles from Fred, as well as how to get around the instrument in several keys, and even how to improvise, so you can (gasp!) play with other people. The mando may be small, but there's a world of music in there, and this is a great way to get started. As a bonus, you're invited to bring in tunes you'd like to play, and Fred will try to include them in the class.

FRETBOARD ROADMAPS FOR UKULELETake your playing to the next level. Fred shows you several ways to play chords and solos all over the fretboard (past the 5th fret!) and illuminates many things about music in general. This class helps you understand the best-selling book by the same name. Once you know the visual patterns on the fretboard that all pros know and use, you can play chords up and down the neck, ad-lib solos, and play in any key. Many light bulb moments are guaranteed!

GUITAR 2.5: MORE GUITAR WITH CHERYL JUST ADDED!This is the class that naturally follows Cheryl's "Guitar 2" class, and is just a little more challenging (hence the 2 1/2 guitar rating). Delve into more advanced songs and a bit of theory. Learn bass runs, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides. Become friendly with barre chords. Start to sound like a professional.

ONGOING MCCABE'S RECORDING STUDIOAre you overflowing with ideas and ready to commit them to the recording process? Join up with Pete Snell at McCabe's Guitar Shop for a one-on-one study on recording piano, guitar and voice. Come prepared to record your music with the best in microphones, mic pre amps, and professional digital software. At the end of each session you will walk out with a CD (or flash drive, if you prefer) of your finished music, ready to be distributed for fame and fortune. Pete Snell has recorded the music of both local and international artists at his Santa Monica recording studio, as well as playing as a session musician for many popular acts (Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed, John Denver and many others).

Group Lesson Policy
Save your place by enrolling early. Drop by the shop, or call us at (310) 828-4497. Be aware that classes with very low turnouts may be canceled (but it doesn't happen too often). And don't forget to practice!
1. We rent for a minimum of three months.
2. We rent anything that retails for $500.00 or less (with some occasional exceptions).
3. The rate is 30% of the cost of instrument and case. (We will not rent without a case unless the customer already has a suitable case.)
4. The first three months' payment can apply toward purchase on that instrument or one of higher value.
5. One may continue renting at the rate of 10% per month after the initial three-month period. However, these payments do not apply toward purchase.
6. One must have a Credit card valid for at least 12 months.
